Tilletia controversa J.G. Kühn (1874) - (dwarf bunt)
Similar to common bunt (Tilletia caries), the dwarf bunt smut fungus infects the developing grains of wheat and replaces them with sori, which are masses of teliospores. These spores are brown–black and have an unpleasant smell. Even at relatively low infection rates, the milled flour acquires this odour. No mycotoxins are involved. The disease can be managed with fungicides and resistant wheat cultivars.
