Tetranychus turkestani (Ugarov & Nikolskii, 1937) - (strawberry spider mite)
This spider mite is widely distributed and infests a large variety of crops, inlcuding cotton, fruit trees, vegetables and soybeans. Heavily infested leaves become necrotic and die. The development from egg to adult mite takes 1 to 2 weeks depending on the temperature. The optimum temperature is around 30° and it is unable to develop at temperatures below 12° C.
The species includes Tetranychus turkestani atlanticus (McGregor).
