Systena frontalis (Fabricius, 1801) - (red-headed flea beetle)
This polyphagous flea beetle is found in North America, where it can be a pest on various crops, like grapevine or cranberries (Vincent & Lasnier, 2020, Jaffe et al., 2021). Other crops attacked include alfalfa, maize, lettuce, potato, soybean, and Brassicas. In addition, it can be a serious problem in containerized ornamental nursery plants, where about 10% of the plants are often lost by the beetle (Herrick & Cloyd, 2020).
The damage is done by the feeding activities of the adult beetles. They prefer the young leaves and can skeletonize the foliage. They also damage flowers and fruits. Little is known about the life cycle of the beetle. Eggs are laid in the soil and the larvae feed on plant roots.
