Synanthedon Hübner, 1819

This is a large and widespread genus of clearwing moths with more than 100 species. Several are important pests, boring into the branches and trunks of fruit, ornamental and forest trees. Vines like grape or currant may also be attacked. In fruit trees, the larvae feed on the inner bark, often girdling limbs and trunks which can result in tree death. For example, important pest species in North America are Synanthedon scitula on apple and Synanthedon exitiosa or S. pictipes on peach.

Type species: Synanthedon vespiformis
