Sturmiopsis parasitica (parasitoid) (Curran, 1939)
This species of tachinid fly is found in sub-Saharan Africa, parasitising caterpillars of various families of Lepidoptera. The range of host species includes important cereal pests like the stem borers Busseola fusca, Chilo partellus or Eldana saccharina. The female parasitoid deposits live first instar larvae (planidia) at the entrance of stemborer tunnels. The planidia move down the tunnel and penetrate the host larvae. The development is completed after around 2-3 weeks, when the mature parasitoid larva emerges from the diapausing host and forms a puparium (Chinwada et al., 2014).
