Stephanitis pyrioides (Scott, 1874) - (azalea lace bug)

This lace bug is indiginous to Asia and has been introduced into North America in the 1940s. It has become a major pest of azaleas (Rhododendron spp.) and in nurseries the feeding damage makes the plants unmarketable. Other plants from the family Ericaceae may be also infested.

The adults and nymphs feed on the undersides of the leaves and suck out the upper palisade parenchyma cells by inserting their stylet through the stomata. As a result the leaves become chlorotic.
