This genus of phytophagous bugs contains around 50 species which are found mainly in temperate regions. They have been reported to feed on the flowers and developing seeds of grasses and cereals. Stenotus rubrovittatus is considered a pest of rice in eastern Asia, where it causes spotting on the grains (pecky rice). S. binotatus is common on grasses in several regions.
The adults are slender, typically 5-10 mm long, with a greenish or greenish brown colouration. There may be coloured marks on the pronotum and the corium.
