Sphenoclea zeylanica (weed) Gaertner - (gooseweed, chickenspike)

This herbaceous plant is an important weed of irrigated rice in Asia, the Pacific and Africa. It is found in rice fields and swamps and grows up to a height of about 50-70 cm. The species is native to tropical parts of Sub-Saharan Africa down to Zambia and Madagascar. However, it has spread to other tropical regions and countries.

The leaves are simple, the developing flowers and fruits are arranged spirally along a compact spike. The flowers are whitish, the fruits are small, spherical and brownish, about 3-4 mm in diameter with numerous tiny seeds, 0.5 mm long.
