Spathius Nees, 1818

This is a large genus of braconid wasps with around 250 species. They are idiobiont (further development of the host is suppressed) ectoparasitoids of beetle larvae living in the xylem of trees. In particular, larvae from the families Curculionidae, Cerambycidae, Anobiidae, Bostrichidae and Buprestidae serve as hosts. Several species are important biological control agents like Spathius agrili which parasitises the larvae of the emerald ash borer, Agrilus planipennis.
