Scolytus multistriatus (Marsham) - (European elm bark beetle)

This bark beetle attacks elm trees in North America and Europe and is an efficient vector of the Dutch elm disease. The species is native to Europe and surrounding regions and has spread with elm wood to a number of other regions like North America and Australia. The adults are 2-3 mm long and breed mainly in weakened and stressed elm trees, forming galleries under the bark. The larvae overwinter in the trees and the young adults emerge in late spring or early summer during the coming year.
