Scolothrips (predators) Hinds, 1902

The genus is widely distributed and includes around 15 species of predatory thrips. They live on plant leaves and feed on spider mites (preferably eggs or early stages) and on some other arthropods. Important biological control agents in this genus are for example Scolothrips longicornis and S. sexmaculatus.

Scolothrips species are characterized by six (rarely five) pairs of long setae on the pronotum as well as a similar pair located between the ocelli.

Type species: Thrips sexmaculata
