Rosa rugosa (weed) Thunb. - (seaside rose)

This species of rose is native to north-eastern Asia and invasive in various temperate regions of Europe and North America. It has often been introduced as an ornamental and escaped cultivation. The weed is a spiny, woody shrub 1-1½ m high which can form dense thickets in coastal areas like sandy dunes. These can completely displace the original vegetation.
