Pyrrhocoris apterus (Linnaeus, 1758) - (linden bug, red firebug)

This omnivorous bug is well known due to its striking red-black colour pattern as well as its gregarious behaviour. It is found in Europe, temperate parts of Asia and North America. The bug feeds mainly on the seeds of lime trees. However, the seeds of other plants (e.g. see Kristenova et al., 2011), as well as insects may also be attacked. P. apterus is often used in the laboratory as a model species to study different aspects of its physiology and biology (e.g. see Socha, 1993.
