Pyrenophora tritici-repentis (Died. 1903) Drechsler 1923

The fungus is found in wheat-growing regions around the world and can lead to yield losses of up to 50%. It causes the tan spot disease of wheat and is especially a problem in reduced tillage systems.

During the infection, light yellow/brown leaf lesions develop which reduce the functioning of the leaves. The symptoms start at the lower leaves as spindle-shaped lesions, often with a dark-brown centre and a chlorotic halo. The lesions enlarge and lead to drying up of the leaves, beginning at the tips. Seeds are small and have a reddish colour (red smudge). The fungus persists in plant debris (as mycelium or pseudothecia) or on alternate hosts like grasses.

Ascospores cause initial infections in spring and the disease spreads quickly through the formation of conidia. Temperature between 20-25°C and moist conditions promote the infections and the dispersal of the fungus. Infected seeds can also transmit the disease. Resistant cultivars, tillage (or stubble burning) and crop rotation are the main management tools. Eight different races of the fungus have been identified and resistance against all races is unknown.

The conidia have a characteristic swollen base, often resembling the shape of a snake's head. There is also a basal hilum, 2-4 µm broad. The conidia are cylindrical with rounded ends, light brown and 80-250 x 15-25 µm large, with 5-6 pseudosepta. The pseudothecia are black and spherical, 200-350 µm large with black spines around their openings. Ascospores are brown and oval, 45-70 x 20-25 µm large with 3 septa.
