Puccinia purpurea Cooke 1876

The fungus is widely distributed and causes sorghum rust. The disease can result in economic damage in some areas with yield losses approaching or exceeding 50%. Other plants may also become infected like maize or grasses. The uredinia are reddish brown and develop on both leaf surfaces. Teliospores are dark brown and aecia have been reported to occur on wood sorrels (Oxalis).
