Puccinia melanocephala Syd. & P. Syd. 1907

The fungus causes sugarcane rust (also called sugarcane brown rust) and is widespread in sugarcane growing regions. It infects the leaves and reduces the sugar yield. Losses can reach 10% and up to 50% during epidemics on susceptible cultivars. The disease is mainly managed by planting resistant cultivars.
