Pteromalus cerealellae (parasitoid) (Ashmead, 1902)
This wasp is widely distributed and a natural enemy of several pests that infest stored grains and legumes. Common hosts are, for example larvae of Sitotroga cerealella, Callosobruchus maculatus, Lasioderma serricorne, Prostephanus truncatus and Sitophilus species.
Female wasps locate a late instar host larva inside the grain or seed and oviposit on the host, after it has been paralysed with a sting. The emerging wasp larva feeds externally on the host (ectoparasitoid). Development of the wasp from egg to adult involves four larval stages and lasts about 2 weeks.
