Psoroptes cuniculi (Delafond, 1859) - (rabbit ear mite)
The mite is the causative agent of mange in rabbits which can result in significant weight losses and other disease symptoms (Hallal-Calleros et al. 2013). It has a world-wide distribution and can also infest horses, goats and deer. The mite pierces the skin in the ears and sucks up body fluids, often causing skin infections.
The development from egg, over the larval and 2 nymphal stages, to the adult lasts 2-3 weeks. Transmission or infection occurs through contact. The mite can survive without feeding for several weeks. For control a suitable pesticide like ivermectin is recommended. The adult female is 400-750 µm long excluding the gnathosoma (males 430-550 µm).
