Pseudomonas cichorii (Swingle 1925) Stapp 1928

This bacterium is wide-spread and infects a wide range of host plants. E.g. it causes bacterial rot and leaf spots on lettuce ("bacterial midrib rot disease of lettuce" and "lettuce varnish spot") as well as black or brown leaf spot diseases, blights or rots on various other crops. The infections can cause significant losses and the pathogen appears to have different virulence mechanisms for different host plants.

The bacterium survives in the soil and in plant debris for more than 3 months. Infections occur through the stomata or via seeds. On lettuce it infects the outer leaves first. The species is Gram-negative and rod-shaped.
