Protopulvinaria pyriformis (Cockerell, 1894) - (pyriform scale)

This soft scale is polyphagous and is found in many subtropical regions. Among others, fruit crops like avocado can become infested, with the scales excreting large amounts of honeydew that results in sooty moulds, and in severe cases leaf drop and dieback of the host plant.

The scale insect reproduces by parthenogenetically and there are usually 2-3 generations per year. The fully grown female scale is between 2-4 mm long and pear-shaped with a white fringe of wax filaments along the outer margin.
