predators - snails
Some predatory snails are used for the biological control of other snails. For example, the decollate snail (Rumina decollata) is commercially available in North America. It is used against pest snails in gardens, especially against introduced species like Cornu aspersum.
The introduction of exotic snails as biocontrol agents is in general viewed critically by environmentalists. In several cases have such introductions led to unwanted affects on non-target organisms, including the extinction of native species (e.g. see Euglandina rosea). For a review of this issue see Cowie (2001).
