The order of Coleoptera includes important families of predatory insects like the ladybird beetles (Coccinellidae) or the ground beetles (Carabidae). These are actively used or promoted as useful natural enemies.
However, the mass release of several species of predatory beetles has resulted in a negative impact on the environment or in other unexpected non-target effects. These are mainly attributed to the superior competitive biology of the released species compared to native species which caused a dramatic decline and sometimes even an extinction of native species.
