Potato virus A (PVA)

The virus has a world-wide distribution and causes a variety of symptoms, depending on the potato cultivar. These range from mild mosaic symptoms to severe leaf necrosis. Yield losses can be high (up to 40%) and serious diseases develop in case of mixed infections with Potato virus X. PVA is transmitted nonpersistently by aphids.

The virus particles are flexuous and filamentous, 730 nm long and 15 mm wide. Like in other potyviruses, the genome consists of positive-sense, single-stranded RNA. It contains about 9,500 nucleotides.

Synonyms:
Tamarillo mosaic virus
