Pontederia (weeds) L. - (water hyacinth)

This genus contains around 80 species of aquatic plants, many of which are native to South America. A number of species have been introduced into other countries as ornamentals and several of them are regarded as invasive weeds with Pontederia crassipes being the most important one. This weed has been found in various tropical and subtropical regions, mainly in lakes or larger rivers which can be completely covered. The plants obstruct human use of the water bodies, block sunlight for native aquatic plants and deplete the water of oxygen.

Taxonomy: In the past, Pontederia crassipes and some other members of the genus have been placed in the genus (or subgenus) Eichhornia. However, detailed taxonomic studies using morphological and molecular characters have concluded that Eichhornia is a junior synonym of Pontederia, e.g. see Pellegrini et al. (2018).
