The symptoms are characterised by dark lesions on the stem orinigationg from the bases of the petioles (black stem of sunflower). Infections may also occur at the collar region of the plants. They result in stunting, often premature death of the plant, yield losses of 10-30% as well as a reduced oil content. Epidemics typically develop after flowering.
