Plantago major (weed) L. - (broadleaf plantain)

This plant is believed to be native to Europe and temperate parts of Asia, but is now widely distributed. It is a very common weed on lawns, but also affects crops like cereals, soybeans or vegetables. In some areas it is regarded as an environmental weed.

The plant consists of a low-growing rosette of broad basal leaves, each about 10-15 cm long and with smooth margins. From the rosette one or several flowering stalks develop with small greenish-brown flowers. The flowers are wind-pollinated and one plant can produce more than 10,000 tiny seeds.
