Pityogenes bidentatus Herbst - (two-toothed pine beetle)

The bark beetles infests mainly stressed trees, stumps and logging residues of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris) in Europe, often together with other species of bark beetles. This species has been frequently intercepted by quarantine in North America and one publication reports an infestation of several pine trees in New York in 1988.

The adults are small, 2-3 mm long and dark brown to black. Males have a hook-like tooth on the end of each elytra, females have a poorly defined tooth. The bark beetle has 1 or 2 generations per year.
