Pineus pini (Macquart, 1819) - (pine woolly adelgid)
This adelgid is native to Europe and Asia. It became a serious pest of pine trees in the 1960s and 1970s in eastern and southern Africa. This species does not have a primary host and only pines are infested.
The 1st instar crawler stage can disperse through the wind, especially to pine seedlings below. Wingless adult females are almost spherical, dark brown to dark red and densely covered with wax filaments. There are 2 or more generations per year, with the 2nd generation also producing winged forms which disperse to other pine trees.
