Pieris Schrank, 1801
The genus contains several hundred species of butterflies with several important agricultural pests like Pieris rapae. The genus is widely distributed in the northern hemisphere, but some pest species have invaded southern Africa. The host plants are mainly crucifers like cabbage and other Brassica species.
The adults are typically white, yellow or orange, often with black marks. The tarsal claws are simple and the labial palps are prominent and raised above the clypeus. Other characters of the genus include the form and venation of the forewings.
