Candidatus Phytoplasma pini Schneider et al., 2005 - (pine shoot proliferation)
This phytoplasma has been reported from Europe, North America and China where it infects conifer trees. Affected trees show symptoms of yellowing, stunting, needle dwarfing, and shoot proliferation. In addition, some pine species develop ball-like structures in the canopy, resulting from a combination of proliferation of shoots and dwarfed needles.
Phytoplasma pini has been assigned to subgroup A of the 16SrXXI phytoplasma group, but phytoplasmas from other groups have also been reported in conifers.
