Phytophthora megakarya Brasier & M.J. Griffin 1979
This oomycete is found in western Africa where it is an important and specialized pathogen of cacao trees. Infections result in root rot, cankers and dieback. Cacao pods rot and turn black and P. megakarya is often the most frequent cause of cacao black pod rot in West Africa. Yield losses due to the disease might exceed 50%.
P. megakarya forms lemon-shaped sporangia that release zoospores. These dispersed by rain splashes and through running water. Chlamydospores with a diameter of around 30 µm as well as oospores can be also produced.
