Phytophthora gemini Man in 't Veld, K. Rosend., Brouwer & De Cock 2011

This pathogen is found in coastal waters of central and northern Europe where it infects the marine eelgrass (Zostera marina). No other hosts have been reported so far.

The species name gemini refers to the twin sporangia which are sometimes formed (see illustration on right). Apart from the molecular structure, the species is characterized by the morphology of its sporangia. These are nonpapillate and often have a tapered base on a conspicuous basal plug. Under laboratory conditions it is a sterile species.
