Phytophthora asparagi Saude & Hausbeck 2012
This oomycete has been described from North America as infecting asparagus (Asparagus officinalis) and causing water-soaked lesions on the shoots and roots. It can result in curved spears and internal discolourations (Crous et al., 2012). The pathogens has been subsequently reported from other regions like Australia, the Mediterranean area and Central America as infecting a variety of other plants.
In culture, P. asparagi produces abundant oospores, but few sporangia and no chlamydospores. Sporangia are 20-60 x 10-35 µm large without papillae.
