Phytophthora andina Adler & Flier, 2010

This oomycete has been only found in the Andes region of South America and is believed to be native there. It is related to Phytophthora infestans. Both species are morphologically indistinguishable, but genetically different. P. andina is believed to by a hybrid between P. infestans and another Phytophthora species (Blair et al. 2012). It is heterothallic because it does not form oospores in cultures. However, when it is paired with A1 isolates of P. infestans it does produce oospores (these are 35-40 µm in diameter). Therefore it is regarded as being equivalent to the A2 mating types of other Phytophthora species (Forbes et al., 2016).
