Phyllotreta Chevrolat, 1837 - (Brassica flea beetles)

This genus of flea beetles is widely distributed in temperate regions and contains more than 200 species. Various species are important pests on cruciferous crops. The adults hibernate in shelters on the ground and start feeding on the leaves of crops and weeds in the spring. Near the end of the spring and in the summer they lay egg. The larvae feed on plant roots and pupate after about 4 weeks. The emerging adults feed on leaves before they start hibernating in autum.

The adults are small, typically around 2-3 mm. The body is oval and the colour is black, often with a metallic reflection. The elytra may have a yellow longitudinal stripe or yellow spots. Other characters of the genus are the morphology of the head, antennae and pronotum.
