Phyllonorycter mespilella (Hübner, 1805)

This leafminer is found in Europe, northern Africa and western North America. It mines the leaves of several Rosaceae including apple, cherry and pear. Pesticide-resistant populations can cause significant damage to apple trees in western North America.

P. mespilella is very similar in morphology and biology to Phyllonorycter blancardella. The wingspan is around 6-8 mm. In Europe, both species can be found on the same trees and even the same leaves. The first 3 instars are sap feeders and the last two (L4 and L5) are tissue‐feeders, forming characteristic tentiform‐shaped mines.
