Phyllonorycter blancardella (Fabricius, 1781) - (spotted tentiform leafminer)
This leafminer species is native to Europe and has been introduced into North America around 1940. It can cause significant damage to apple trees, but outbreaks are rare in Europe. The mines are oval, swollen on the upper side of the leaf but flat or slightly concave and silvery on the lower side (tentiform mines).
The larvae pass through 5 instars. L1 to L3 are sap-feeders, whereas L4 and L5 are tissue feeders with a corresponding adaption of their morphology. There are typically 2 generations per year. The adults are dark brown with broad white streaks. The wingspan is 6-9 mm.
