Phlebotomus orientalis Parrot, 1936
The species is considered to be an important vector of visceral leishmaniasis (caused by Leishmania donovani) in the Near East and eastern Africa. For example, it is a common leishmaniasis vector in parts of Sudan, where outbreaks might develop between March and June. It bites humans during the night and most commonly in the first hours after sunset. However, it appears to prefer bovines. Other domestic animals are also important hosts like donkeys, goats, sheep, dogs, and camels (e.g. Gebresilassie et al., 2015). While it usually does not enter houses, it can be common around houses.
