Phaeosphaeria maydis (Henn.) Rane, Payak & Renfro - (Phaeosphaeria leaf spot of maize)

This fungus causes a leaf spot disease on maize (corn) in the Americas. The lesions have been described as circular or oval, necrotic, bleached, and dried with dark brown margins. In Brazil, these symptoms are often referred to as 'white spot disease' of maize. However, several plant pathogens have been associated with such symptoms and in Brazil, the bacterium Pantoea ananatis appears to be the main causal agent of the maize white spot disease (e.g. see Gonçalves et al., 2013).
