Peromyscus leucopus Rafinesque - (white-footed mouse)

This mouse damages tree seedlings and seeds in eastern and central North America. However, it is more important as a reservoir of the Lyme disease spirochete, Borrelia burgdorferi, and the protozoan parasite, Babesia microti, both causing human diseases and both transmitted by the blacklegged tick, Ixodes scapularis, particularly in north-eastern states. Studies have shown that the percentage of mice infected with either disease often exceeds 50%. It can also harbor other human diseases like viruses.
