Passer Brisson, 1760 - (sparrows)

This genus of birds contains 25-30 species of sparrows. They are mainly grain eating and can form swarms. Several species are considered minor cereal pests. More important are invasive populations, mainly of Passer domesticus, because they compete with and replace local bird species.

The species are small (10-25 cm long) with a short beak and tail. The colour is usually brownish and in most species there are clear colour differences between males and females. The males usually have a black throat and pale grey or white cheeks.
