Parthenolecanium persicae (Fabricius, 1776) - (European peach scale)

This soft scale is widely distributed in temperate and subtropical regions. It is a serious, polyphagous pest, affecting mainly fruit trees and grapevine. Heavy infestation can reduce the growth of the trees and vines. There is only one generation per year with 3 instars. Females produce eggs in the summer which hatch and develop up to the 3rd instar stage. The third instars overwinter under the bark of the host plant and complete their development in spring.

Mature females are typically around 5 mm long, brownish and with an oval outline. P. persicae is morphologically very similar to Parthenolecanium corni.
