Steneotarsonemus spinki Smiley, 1967 - (panicle mite of rice)

This mite is a pest of rice in Central America and southern parts North America as well as in Asia. It feeds inside the sheath on the young growing leaves and and when a rice leaf starts to unfold, the mites move to younger leaves. The damage causes blight symptoms of the leaves and the panicles. The panicles are often damaged and grains do not develop or are deformed. Yield losses can exceed 50%.

The mite was originally described from a rice plant hopper in Louisiana in 1967, a possible vector of the mite. However, it was not reported again until 2007, when large populations appeared in Texas and in other areas.
