Otodectes cynotis (Hering, 1838) - (ear mite)

This mite is widely distributed and infests the ears of domestic and wild animals. Cats are the most commonly infected domestic animals and the mite also spreads to humans occasionally. It causes intense itching. Transmission occurs through contact between animals. One life cycle lasts around 3 weeks.

The female mite is about 400-500 µm long, males are smaller. The first two pairs of legs have adhesive pads at the end of the tarsi. The 3rd pair bears 2 long bristles and the 4th pair is very small.
