Oryzaephilus mercator (Fauvel, 1889) - (merchant grain beetle)

The beetle is a serious pest of stored oil seeds, mainly in tropical countries. However, it has been introduced into temperate regions, where it lives in various types of stores. For example, it can infest dried fruits, grains, or stored animal feeds like dried cassava.

The adult beetles is between 2½ and 3½ mm long with an oval-shaped pronotum with six sharp teeth on each side and a reddish-brown colouration. Compared to the morphologically similar Oryzaephilus surinamensis, O. mercator has larger eyes with the distance between the hind margin of the eyes and the hind margin of the head being clearly shorter than the length of the eyes.
