Orthotospovirus chrysanthinecrocaulis
Assigned virus:
• chrysanthemum stem necrosis virus (CSNV)
The chrysanthemum stem necrosis virus infects chrysanthemums, tomatoes and some other plants. It was first described from Brazil but has been also reported from Japan. In addition, local outbreaks have occurred in several European countries, related to chrysanthemum imports from Brazil. The virus is listed as a quarantine organism in Europe.
The symptoms on chrysanthemums include necrotic leaf lesions surrounded by yellow spots as well as necrosis of stems and floral parts. Some species of the thrips genus Frankliniella are able to transmit the virus.
Like other tospoviruses, the genome consists of 3 RNA segments, named large (L), medium (M), and small (S). The negative-sensed L RNA has almost 9,000 nt, the M RNA around 4,800 nt and the S RNA almost 3,000 nt (see Wu et al., 2015 and Dullemans et al., 2015).
