Ornithonyssus sylviarum (Canestrini & Fanzago) - (northern fowl mite)

This mite is widely distributed and an important blood-sucking ectoparasite of poultry, similar to the poultry red mite (Dermanyssus gallinae). Serious infestations have been mainly reported from North America which can reduce egg production. In Europe the mite is mainly found on birds and only occasionally in poultries. Humans in close contact with poultry or birds can also become infested and the mite can cause allergies. It can further transmits several virus diseases.
