Ornithonyssus Sambon, 1928
This genus of blood-sucking ectoparasitic mites is widely distributed and is common in the Americas. It contains more than 30 species which are mainly found on birds. Several are poultry pests and the mites can also infest humans, causing dermatitis and transmitting rickettsial and viral diseases. Important pest species are Ornithonyssus sylviarum and Ornithonyssus bursa in tropical and subtropical regions.
The genus is characterized by the setae being slender and often barbed, especially on the legs and the abdomen, as well as by the morphology of the coxae and by the dorsal plate being entire. The legs are moderately long.
