Opuntia stricta (weed) Haworth - (prickly pear or Australian pest pear)
This cactus is an important weed in several countries (e.g. Australia and southern or eastern Africa), especially in wildlife reserves. The species is native to Central America and has been widely introduced into other regions, mainly for ornamental purposes or for establishing live fences in livestock areas. The plants usually grow to a height of around 1 m and the flowers are typically bright yellow. Mature fruits are reddish.
The plant is invasive, reduces grazing land and restricts human activities. The fruits are inferior in comparison to other Opuntia species. People have abandoned homes as a result of infestations. Once established, it is difficult to remove, burning and herbicides being the most common approaches.
