Opuntia (weeds) Mill. - (prickly pear cacti)
The genus Opuntia is widely distributed in the Americas and contains more than 100 species of cacti known as prickly pears. Several species are grown commercially as fruits or fodder crops and some of these have been introduced into Africa, Australia, Europe and Asia. In some cases the introductions were intended to establish a carmine dye industry. Some of the introduced species have become weedy affecting crops and livestock production.
